“Dad? Can I talk to you about something?” Teddy asked, watching his father with the kind of wariness one typically saw on squirrels in the park when approaching a potential meal that was far too close to people, but far too tempting to pass up.
Mar-vell watched his son right back. “Sure. What’s on your mind?”
“It’s about sex,” Teddy said, quickly and quietly.
“Ah.” Mar-vell continued to watch Teddy. “Aren’t you kind of young to be asking about this?” he asked, hoping for a way out of the conversation he suddenly seemed trapped in.
Teddy looked down at his shoes. “‘m twelve,” he mumbled.
Mar-vell grimaced, thinking quickly. “Alright. So, what do you want to know?”
Teddy continued to study his shoes. This went on for several minutes before the boy finally answered his father’s question. “What do you do if you like someone?”
“Generally, it’s considered a good idea to tell them how you feel.” Mar-vell felt himself smiling, squatting down so he was on eye level with Teddy. A part of him remembered when he’d have to get much farther down to look his son in the eyes. “Who’s the lucky girl? Anyone I know?” he asked, hoping it wasn’t Cassie Lang. That way, he knew, lay trouble.
“‘s not a girl.”
Mar-vell blinked. “Oh.”
Teddy squirmed, eyes still locked firmly on the floor as a red flush crept up his face. “Yeah.”
“That’s… not going to be easy for you, Teddy. Especially not on this planet.”
“Will he hate me if I tell him?” Teddy asked, finally looking up to gaze at his father with pain filled blue eyes. “I don’t want him to think I’m a freak.”
“I don’t know what to tell you, Teddy. I’m sorry.”
