When Nezhno Abidemi first left Wakanda with the woman who would one day be his queen, he had planned… something. To return home in triumph, to finally be accepted by his people, to finally have his mother look at him and not wear her shame so openly on her face.
To be greeted with cries of joy, rather than to have mothers snatch their children to them as he passed on the street, lest he somehow infect them with his impurity, his outsider blood.
In his dreams, he returned to Wakanda as a hero, like something out of the oldest stories.
He had known from the very beginning, of course, that this would not happen, but a part of him (the part that had listened with rapt attention to any storyteller who would let him sit close enough to hear) had still hoped.
Hoped to redeem his tainted blood.
Hope, it seemed, sprung eternal, even for someone who thought that he had accepted his lot in life.
It would have been better, Nezhno decided upon his return, after the disbanding of the X-Men, if he had never gone to Xaviers at all. At least then, he wouldn’t miss being accepted as much as he was starting to.
