“Can I see them?” Julian asked, his eyes on the high collar that covered Victor’s neck. The reptilian mutant had been wearing nothing but turtlenecks since his return, ever since the bandages had come off. Victor put his hand to his throat, taking a step back from the telekinetic.

What?”

“Can I see the scars?” Julian repeated. “It’s not like I haven’t seen them before,” he added.

Sometimes, Julian had nightmares about the awful red wounds that had dotted Victor’s neck when he’d found him, like someone had driven needles into Victor’s flesh over and over, leaving behind tiny wounds that refused to heal.

Victor rubbed his neck, his chest rising and falling faster as he worried his lower lip between his teeth. With a show of reluctance, he tugged the high neck of his sweater down, tilting his head up and away as Julian leaned in so close that his breath tickled Victor’s neck. There were tiny white scars up and down his neck, standing out starkly against Victor’s green skin. A few were bigger than the others, favorite places for the vampire to suck blood from. Maybe eventually the scars would fade to nothing.

Julian doubted that, though.

A mad impulse seized Julian’s brain, encouraging him to lean forward, to bite Victor’s neck and taste his flesh, erasing the vampire’s marks with one of his own. He stopped himself before he could follow through with the idea. “Can I touch them?”

Victor pulled the turtle neck back up.

“Sorry, didn’t mean to push.”
