“Ooooh….”

Kate stopped walking and turned around, snagging Ray-Ray by the arm before the girl could breeze past. Becca was standing in front of the Manolo Blahnik store, eyeing a pair of heels like a starving man might a steak.

“Jesus Christ, Becks, don’t you have enough shoes? Kaaaate, I’m tired of shoe shopping!”

I am so glad I don’t have kids, and I can take these two back to their parents, Kate thought. “We can come back later, Rebecca.”

Becca tore her eyes away from the shoes. Kate arched and eyebrow and tapped her watch. “Just five minutes?” the girl asked.

“That’s not a five minute store, kid,” Kate said, not unkindly.

“I could catch up with you.”

“And if anything happened, your fathers would very rightly blame me. C’mon.”

Becca heaved the sigh of the opressed teenager and tore herself away from the shoes.
