Sam Guthrie pulled out his wallet, tugging out the worn old photograph he kept tucked inside.
The photo of his mama and the littles lived on his beside table, but this one staid with him all the time.
It was the only picture he had of his father.
The picture was of Sam and his dad on the front porch, with the older man showing him how to coax a tune out of a beat up old six-string. Sam had been twelve at the time, or there abouts.
The coal mine took his father two years later.
When Sam had gone down into the dark, he’d taken the picture with him.
It’d been with him after the mind had collapsed, and he’d blasted his way out into the air.
It wasn’t as good as having his father there, but it was something.
