“Shouldn’t you, like, be a sophomore?” Kitty asked, reading Sam’s class schedule. “We’re the same age, right?”
Sam carefully piled his books onto the table. “I have to drop out of high school my freshman year. Dad died, and I needed to get a job.” All this was delivered in a nonchalant manner, like quitting school was no big deal at all.
“But what kind of job could you get without a diploma?”
“My daddy’s job. I went down into the mines.”
