“Naruto, you pervert!” Sakura screeched, knocking the blonde Jinchuuriki flat on his face. Hinata’s steps faltered, but the blonde just sprang back up, laughing and rubbing the back of his head. Part of Hinata wished Naruto wasn’t a part of the second wedding party, but he’d looking so happy to be invited to the first one…
But the jokes about her and Gaara’s first night? Those she could have done without. Of course, it was entirely possible that the questions from Sakura were worse. How was she supposed to explain that, aside from one kiss, he had left her alone all night?
In her way, she was grateful to Naruto for distracting Sakura.

“You’d better not have hurt her.”
Gaara blinked, turning his head to look into a pair of bright blue eyes. “Naruto.”
The Jinchuuriki paced beside the Kazekage, looking unusually serious. “If you hurt her, you’ll regret it.”
You’re the one who’s hurting her, Gaara thought. “I treasure her,” he assured his friend.
The blonde smiled, honestly and cheerfully. “Good. She deserves nothing less.”
“In that, we are agreed.”
***
“You alright?”
Hinata let out a little gasp, looking up from the ground and into a face that could only be described as demonic. “K-kankuro-sama! I’m–I-”
He laughed softly and waved a hand at her, shifting the scrolls on his back a bit. “No need to be so formal, Hinata-chan. We’re family.”
“I’m sorry, Kankuro-s-” He arched a painted eyebrow, and she blushed. “Kankuro.”
“See? That wasn’t so hard.” His teeth were very white when he smiled. “You didn’t answer my question, Hinata-chan.”
“I’m fine,” she said in a small voice.
“You’re avoiding Gaara.” Kankuro noted, his tone conversational. Hinata didn’t bother to deny it. The others had made it easy so far, separating the two to grill them individually about last night. “We spent last night playing Go,” her brother-in-law went on. Hinata flushed, and he chuckled. “Poor girl… you’re doomed to blush visibly for the rest of your life with that complexion. I’ll get you some sunblock before we reach home.”
“Thank you,” she whispered.
“Anything you need, you just ask.” He gave her another smile.
***
“She’s scared,” Kankuro murmured to his brother.
“Clearly, she’s smarter than most would give her credit for,” Gaara murmured back. He smiled to himself.
“I don’t get it.” Kankuro looked up at the sky as if he could pull the answers he sought from there. “Why her?”
“Because.”
“‘Because’ is not a reason, and you know it.”
Gaara joined his brother in looking up at the sky. “Because she’s special. She deserves better than they give her.”
“And you can give her better?” Kankuro asked.
The Kazekage nodded.
