Title: Masks
Characters: Gaara, Hinata
Prompt: 32. Hunter-Nin
Rating: PG-13
Summary: He wonders what made her take up the masks.
Author's Notes: I own nothing.
She hides behind the porcelain mask, but he knows it’s her. He remembers the scent of her blood and she is bleeding now. But the missing-nin she has brought to lay at the Hokage’s feet is in far worse shape. He politely makes his exit, allowing Tsunada to deal with more important business.
He wonders what has happened to the pale, fragile creature from years before, that caused her to become this.
Days later, he sees her again. She is wearing a different mask. The people call her Hyuuga-dono and they smile and they bow. She she smiled and nods back, and greets him with a polite “Good morning, Kazekage-sama.”
A mask of flesh, but still a mask. He wonders what has shaped it.
He finds he late at night, kneeling before the memorial to Konoha’s fallen, weeping, masks put away for now. His fingers trace the names of the dog-nin and the bug-nin, her father and sister and cousin, and the name of the one she misses most and he came to see. He holds her and he lets her cry until the sun rises and she must once again don her masks.
