Gaara looked at the spray that decorated the once pristine white wall, entranced by the shapes the drops had made. He kept himself from reaching out and touching the blood, kept himself from tasting it, but only just.
Naruto’s tears and begging seemed far away, though the distance between them was only a few feet. He held the corpse of the pale Hyuuga heiress in his arms and whispered to her desperately, like he could coax her back to life.
Silently, Gaara reached over and brushed the dead girl’s hair away from her forehead. The mark had already faded. He could almost hear the echo of her words hanging in the air.
“Better dead than trapped.”
