“It’s not over,” Cassie said, even as she gazed up at the monstrous, looming figure of the demon Stophelies. It towered over the tallest of the city’s sky scrapers, huge and red and awful, painful to even look on. The scarab shrieked information at her, almost as panicked as she was. But she wasn’t going to show how scared she was. And it didn’t matter, or so she kept telling herself. She’d seen dozens of so called Apocalypses come and go. Next week, this was going to be just another story, something to laugh over.
“Has anyone seen Teddy and William?” Elijah called, his voice straining as he kept the wall he was holding up from collapsing on top of the stream of evacuees they were trying to get out of the danger zone.
“Not since before we broke you out!” Katie yelled back over the sound of her fire extinguisher.
“Teddy was with us when we were caught,” Cassie said. The scarab informed her that the shape shifter had turned into a rodent and left them, suggesting that when they saw Teddy again, a beating was in order.
“My money’s on he went to rescue my brother,” Bart said, actually passing by a dozen times before he finished the sentence.
“Where are the JLA when you want them?” Elijah asked rhetorically.
[Trapped outside the city, attempting to penetrate Stophelies’ barrier,] Red Vision informed them. [It is growing at a rate of half a meter every twelve minutes,] he added helpfully.
“We can beat this,” Cassie said. “We have to.”
Something drew the demon’s attention, and it started to bring a huge hand down, only to suddenly shriek in pain and flinch away from a brilliant light.
The scarab helpfully informed Cassie that the source of the light was, in fact, William.
“YOU. WILL. NOT. HURT. TEDDY!“
