Jubilee perched on the edge of the kitchen table, giving Jono a thoughtful look as she rolled the question he‘d asked her over in her mind. “I can think of a lot of reasons why this is a really bad idea,” she said, ticking off points on her fingers. “One, I’m seventeen so it’s probably not legal in California…”

We’re on Utopia, I don’t think we’re actually subject to American law,

“Shush, I’m not done.” She waved a hand at Jono. “Two, and this one is really important. I’m a vampire. Which means I’m kinda dead, which just adds this whole other layer of ew to everything. Plus, I bet Scott’s not down with necrophilia anyway.” She paused, wrinkling her nose. “Y’know, on second thought, pretend I never said that last bit and pass me the brain bleach, cause that‘s a whole thing I don‘t wanna think about ever again.”

I’m pretty sure no one’s gonna hold the vampire thing against you, love. Except whats-her-face with the armor thing and the attitude. But she doesn’t matter. She’s not invited. Next argument.

Vampire isn’t enough for you?” Jubilee asked, exasperated.

Jono folded his hands behind his head, and she was sure that if he’d still had a mouth, he would be grinning. No heart. No blood flow. Not sure if I even have blood anymore.

“Why are you even asking me?” she asked quietly, looking down at the floor. Her legs swung back and forth restlessly.

Because I can, Jono said, imitating Jubilee’s previous pose of ticking things off on the fingers of one hand. Because I love you, in my own incredibly fucked up way. Because I want to make you happy and don’t think I didn’t see the way you were looking at Cyclops and Emma when he finally offered to make an honest woman outta her. Both of them chuckled, unable to help themselves. Because you’re probably the only woman who can put up with me for long stretches of time. Because I’m pretty sure you love me too. He held up his other hand, clearly intending to go on, but Jubilee grabbed it and forced it back down.

“Super-villains always crash these things.”

We’ll invite ‘em. Maybe they’ll wait until after the cake.

Jubilee leaned forward, letting go of Jono’s hand and giving him a full on, red eyed vampire glare. “You need to work on your sense of humor.”

I’m not joking about anything. Jono got out of his chair and got down on one knee in front of Jubilee, fumbling in the pocket of his jacket for a few moments before producing a pair of earrings. Not ‘xactly traditional, but you lose rings all the time, so… There was a pause like a mental clearing of a throat. Jubilation Lee, will you do me the very great and entirely undeserved honor of being my wife?

“Well, when you put it like that, how could I say no?”
