“Something smells… really good,” Martin O’Carolyn said as Ba Nee came skipping in, holding a small white paper bag in her hands. Ms. Benton followed the girl in, offering him a polite smile. Martin had dropped Ba Nee off with her that morning; he’d had group therapy early that afternoon, followed by an appointment with his doctor to talk about the side effects of his new medication.
“We made brownies!” Ba Nee said excitedly, holding the bag out to him and looking at him like an enthusiastic puppy waiting to be told what a good job it had done getting the stick. Martin fished one of the slightly gooey brownies out and bit down.
“Delicious,” he assured her. Ba Nee gave him a dazzling smile and dashed off to put her backpack in her room.
“How’s she settling in?” Ms. Benton asked quietly.
“Pretty well,” Martin told her. “She’s very… energetic. A ray of sunshine.” He smiled a little, scratching his beard. “It’s been an adjustment.”
“If you need any help, we’re just a phone call away.”
“Thank you, Ms. Benton.”
