“Are. You. Insane?” Billy asked as Tommy showed him the ring.
“You keep telling me I am,” Tommy said, closing the little velvet jewelry box and putting it back in his pants pocket. “Why change now?”
“Tommy, this is a huge commitment. This is - y’know-”
“Forever? Yeah, duh.” He paused. “Ignoring divorce, I mean. But yeah. I’m giving this to Megan tonight. Which is why I need you, little brother.”
Billy blinked, then pulled back, expression full of suspicion.
“It’s nothing bad,” Tommy said quickly. “Honestly. I just need one little thing…”

“Are those flaming butterflies?” Megan asked, a hand covering her grin.
“They were just supposed to be regular butterflies,” Tommy muttered. “Bastard.”
“Huh?”
“This was supposed to be my big romantic gesture, but of course Billy had to upstage me.” Tommy draped an arm around Megan’s shoulders, the little velvet jewelry box in his hand. It took two tries, but he managed to flick it open with his thumb.
“Oh. My. God.” Megan took the box from Tommy, making a high pitched noise that made Tommy wince. At least it seemed the ring had upstaged the flaming butterflies.
