Summary: Liam’s been expecting her, but he really has no idea what she’s getting him in to.
Liam Hampton-Whoolsy was mildly surprised to find a mud covered woman dressed in flannel and holding a shovel standing in his church. Liam wasn’t completely surprised to see her, though. The woman had been lurking about since he’d been installed in the vicarage. Several of the sweet old ladies who flocked around him had explained that she was Old Man Gaerwn’s girl Xanthe, and wasn’t it a shame how the old man had made the girl work in that filthy old graveyard. He’d spotted her lurking in the back on Sundays, watching him. She was… creepy. And now she was here.
“Evening, Vicar.”
“Miss, uh, Gaerwn, isn’t it? How can I help you?”
“Care to take a walk with me, Vicar? There’s something you need to see.”

The building stood in the middle of a lake that shouldn’t even have been there. The whole thing was impossible, from the moment they’d left the stone walls that bordered the cemetery behind them. They’d walked for hours, fog rolling in as dead leaves crunched beneath their feet.
The problem with that was that it was late spring, very nearly summer.
“What is this?” Liam whispered.
“Temple of the Old Gods,” Xanthe said as if it were something she saw every day.
“Pops up when the stars are right. We’ll be sending it back tonight, so I suggest you get your gear together.”
“Get my -- are you insane?”
The woman smiled. It was an expression that made her look vaguely like a horse, all teeth and gums.
“My God, you are insane.”
“No,” Xanthe said. “I just know what I’m getting in to. C’mon, I’ll show you what you need for your kit.”
