Cassie Lang liked to think of herself as someone who had seen and done it all. Nothing could phase her, nothing could surprise her… and usually she was right. Being in the superhero business most of her life did that to a person.
But on the thirty-ninth day of the Sanitation Worker’s Strike, Cassie found herself positively dumbstruck.
“I’m taking a vacation,” Hudson said, his normally bass growl coming out considerably more nasal than usual. “Call me when the strike’s over.”
“Uh-huh,” Cassie managed to get out, biting the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing, her eyes locked on Hudson’s nose plug. “Not enjoying summer in the city?”
“I,” Hudson growled, “can smell. Everything. Every dirty diaper, every rotting, half eaten meal. All of it. Even in here.” He shouldered a worn duffle bag, hunching his shoulders. “Whole damn city could burn to the ground and it would be an improvement.”
