Summary: The very air seems to be burning in his lungs.
Warnings/Spoilers: I don’t think this really counts as a spoiler anymore.
The first conscious breath came as such a shock that the air rushed right back out of Jono’s new lungs. It… burned. The second breath was harsh and ragged and it felt like the air was clawing at his throat (something ELSE he hadn’t had for a while).
The third breath came when his body took over, insisting that it did, in fact, need oxygen to continue to function.
He looked down at his flesh, which was an almost corpse-like grey, and at the livid red tattoo that spread across his chest like a stain, or like the brand of ownership that he knew it to be.
That drove the breath right back out of his lungs.
