“Hi, Dad,” Terry said, slumping in his seat as he held the phone up to his ear. He heard his father's breath catch. “How you doing?”
“Terry-”
“Something must've come up yesterday,” Terry went on, even though he knew he was being bitchy. “You know, something big enough to miss my funeral.”
“You're dead,” his father whispered in a choked off kind of way.
“I got better. Seems to happen a lot to people in my line of work. I'm an official, licensed super-hero now.”
“But you're dead.”
“I was dead,” Terry corrected. “How'd Billy take the news?” he added in a gentler tone.
“I didn't tell him.”
Silence seemed to fill the room around Terry like a flood, threatening to drown him, and he bit his lower lip, fighting back tears.
“You asshole.”
He gently hung up the phone and closed his eyes, trying to ignore the prickling in his there, then the hot wet tears rolling down his cheeks.
